Restaurants in Budapest

Hungary has a deep Jewish heritage, and Jewish food has greatly influenced Hungarian cuisine. Jewish settlers brought their own cooking styles and ingredients. The tradition of pickling vegetables, for example, became popular in Hungary. Kosher restaurants in Budapest have a long tradition.

Budapest is home to a variety of kosher restaurants, offering a range of dishes prepared according to Jewish dietary laws. Because of that, the prices are a bit higher than average restaurants. From classic Hungarian dishes to Middle Eastern favorites, these restaurants provide a real showcase of kosher cuisine. Here is a list of some of the best kosher restaurants in Budapest for you to enjoy.

Cafe Tamar

Cafe Tamar might be the best Kosher restaurant (dairy) in Budapest, at least according to the customers. They serve Israeli dishes as well as pizzas. The same crew runs a falafel bar nearby that is worth checking out.

“The food was absolutely delicious!! Great ambience very good service and very informative and sweet waiter Wish we can have tamar cafe in brooklyn!!!” (Tripadvisor)

I’ve been visiting from the US for a few days, and this is hands down the best kosher food in town! The flavors are incredible, and the unique touch in every dish truly sets this place apart.” (Google)

Brooklyn Bagel

Brooklyn Bagel is located in Zsilip Synagogue and Jewish Center. Bagels seem to be a hit, but there are other tasty dishes. If you are ordering takeaway, check the fee; it’s not mentioned in the menu.

“Excellent food, the bagels were amazing, between three of us we had a breakfast bagel, a sweet bagel and a savoury bagel, all really nice. Staff were lovely as well.” (Tripadvisor)

A delicious kosher place, far away from the Jewish district and ideally close to Margaret island. The staff was very nice and one of them spoke Hebrew. We took two custom bagels and a cheese cake and they were great. (Google)

Carmel

Carmel is one of the oldest kosher restaurants in Budapest, serving traditional Hungarian and Jewish dishes. Live music is a big draw. They serve Shabbat meals, but you have to arrange it beforehand. Reservations are highly recommended.

The food at Caramel was absolutely delicious, and they even had a band for the Chanukkah season, which added a great touch to the experience. (Google)

Ashis’ Israeli Street Food

Ashis’ serves fresh and tasty kosher street food in a very friendly and laid-back setting. Atmosphere stands out.

“Amazing kosher Israeli food; felt like we were in Machane Yehuda market in Jerusalem! Would highly suggest a visit when in Budapest. Simply delicious.” (Google)

I just went to this Kosher Israeli fast food place in Budapest and it was fantastic! The food was super delicious. I had the schnitzel and it was just right – crispy on the outside and tender inside. The pargit was flavorful, and the pulled beef asado was so good, it practically melted in my mouth. I love that everything is kosher. It’s great to have such tasty options. The staff were really friendly too. (myjewishlistings.com)
