The Best of the Best
Where we could, we made the choices for the best Budapest has to offer, in different categories. These are completely subjective, many people will disagree, and that’s ok. We all experience food differently. Why do it: to give visitors to Budapest, who most often stay just a few days, a chance to experience, in our opinion, something realy special.
The Best Fine dining restaurant
Stand
The only Budapest restaurant with two Michelin stars, Stand is a definition of fine dining. Perfectly preperad and presented food (modern, imaginative Hungarian cuisine), the best local ingredients, impeccable service, elegant settings. All that comes with a hefty price, though: it is the most expensive restaurant in Budapest.
“My wife and I came here to celebrate our anniversary and we believe it is one of the best Michelin restaurants in the world; it is very deserving of the two stars. The service was impeccable; the two men who served us were nice, knowledgeable, everything. The food was delicious, from the first dish to the very last bite. Usually at Michelin restaurants, most dishes but not all are amazing, but at Stand there was not even one bad bite or dish.“ (Tripadvisor)
“Amazing gastronomical experience at this fine dining establishment! We had the Tasting menu, accompanied with a few pairings of local wines, one of them was an amazing sweet Tokaj Wine 🎯 The food was outstanding and also the service.”(Google)
“The wonderfully rich gulyás soup and the soft, flavoursome venison are hits, as is the ever-present somlói dessert. When it comes to wine, look to the Hungarian options – there are some great sweet Tokajis on the list”.(Michelin Guide)

The best views
Aranybástya
There are many rooftop bars and restaurants in Budapest with great views. Overall, Aranybástya is the winner. Just close enough to the Danube, but high enough to offer incredible panoramic views from its terrace, especially after dark. The building itself is beautiful, both exterior and interior. Another advantage: easily accessible from the Castle District. They serve high-quality Hungarian and international dishes, with matching service.
“This restaurant delivers everything you hope for: authentic Hungarian dishes, warm and attentive service, and a beautiful overlook that makes the whole experience feel special. The food is rich, comforting, and full of traditional flavors — from perfectly seasoned goulash to tender meats and homemade sides. Paired with the stunning view and genuinely welcoming staff, it’s a place you’ll want to return to.” (Tripadvisor)
“Location is really awesome. Traditional food is really nice and the service by Márk was perfect. He is really kind and welcoming. We will surely be back here on our next travel in Budapest.“ (Google)
“This place is a real gem. Absolutely amazing place, so beautiful with an unforgettable view. We had a wonderful evening here. All the food and wine were delicious. My biggest compliments go to our waiters.” (Tripadvisor)

The best value for money
Mama Goulash
There are so many good things about Mama Goulash: great location (in the heart of the Jewish Quarter, the coolest neighbourhood in the city center), great Hungarian food (small menu, but very authentic, tasty, and generous portions), fantastic service (very friendly, efficient servers; food comes out very fast because the menu is small, but it’s always fresh and warm). Finally, all that comes with very budget-friendly prices. No bookings, so sometimes you have to wait in line a bit. But there is another location (Mama Goulash – Schnitzel House) very close by, so if one is too busy, you can check the other one.
“Very quick service, the food was fresh and authentic, the portions are generous. Cannot fault, if you are looking for local cuisine this is perfect. Reasonable prices. They also have two premises now which shows how popular they are!“ (Tripadvisor)
“What can I say? They have delicious goulash soup and excellent chicken paprikash! I also recommend their delicious toast. Finger-licking good!“ (Google)
“A week’s vacation in Budapest and this is definitely our favorite place. Delicious food, good service. No one is a jerk. Good prices. Our waiter tonight was Gustavo, but the others are at least as good. If we come again we will eat here every night.” (Google)

The best lunch menu
N28 Wine and Kitchen
Is N28 Wine And Kitchen a restaurant or a wine bar? A fair question, since they are trying to match food with wine, rather than the opposite. The place has a wonderful selection of special wines, unique to Budapest, and a menu designed to accommodate that. But the food (modern, seasonal Hungarian cuisine) is great too and the service top-notch. If you are looking for a good deal, there is a marvelous daily menu: premium quality for a very reasonable price (check out their Facebook page for the info on that).
“A wonderful experience from end to end. Food, wine, staff, everything was fantastic. I think the main dish and dessert are some of the best I’ve ever eaten. If you are curious about Bib Gourmand, try this one.“. (Tripadvisor)
“Exceptionally good food, friendly and attentive service, and a pleasant atmosphere. They offer a multi-course lunch menu at a very fair price.“. (Google)
“The surroundings might be modern, but there’s a traditional element to the menu, which looks to the Hungarian larder for its base.” (Michelin Guide)

The best chimney cake
Mütyür Kürtőskalács
Overall (quality, prices, location) Mütyür Kürtőskalács is the best chimney cake shop in Budapest. Fresh, crispy on the outside, soft inside; every cake is made with passion to perfection. Workers with great skill and attitude, they always try their best to make customers happy.
“Amazing, we shared a cocoa covered chimney cake with pistachio cream inside and it was one of the best things I’ve ever tasted. She cooked it fresh for us so we waited about 5 minutes outside and the lovely area made it a very pleasant wait. Just down the road from a lovely park too where we enjoyed our chimney cake. Definitely the best place to go!“ (Tripadvisor)
“The cutest moment of our trip to Budapest! The manager was a sweetheart, chatting with us and always smiling—a real treat for delicious chimney cakes that were much more affordable than elsewhere. Highly recommended!” (Google)
“My wife and I are Americans and never had chimney cake before. This place blew us away. Beyond the treat being delicious, they pour their soul into this food, and that’s what sets it apart.” (Google)

The best steakhouse
Beerstro 14
Steaks cooked to perfection, tasty drinks, beautiful surroundings, impeccable service – it’s hard to pinpoint the number one reason why Beerstro14 is such an exceptional restaurant. Great place for special occasions. Like most premium restaurants in Budapest, they have a great wine list and cocktails, but there is more: 14 different kinds of local craft beer on tap!
“Beerstro 14 in Budapest is a standout dining experience. The meat dishes are exceptional—perfectly cooked, full of flavor, and clearly crafted with care. Their wine selection is impressive, especially the Hungarian wines, which pair beautifully with the food. The service is another highlight: polite, attentive, and genuinely helpful without ever feeling intrusive. A fantastic place for anyone who appreciates great food, great wine, and warm hospitality.” (Tripadvisor)
“My colleagues and I had the best steaks of our lives here! I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for an excellent gastronomic experience!” (Google)
“We had a delicious meal at Bistro14. The food and service were top-notch. For someone who is very picky about food, this is highly recommended. If I had stayed longer in Budapest, I would definitely have gone there again.” (Google)

The most historic
Gundel
Gundel Cafe Patisserie Restaurant is simply an icon, a legend more than a century old. The founder, Károly Gundel, created modern Hungarian cuisine and made it known to the world. His cookbooks are the best-known books in Hungarian gastronomy. He wrote in foreign languages, gave cooking demonstrations and exhibitions, and popularized Hungarian cuisine, boosting tourism. The restaurant today still uses his recipes and follows his principles. When you eat at Gundel, you simply taste history. Elegant interior, beautiful garden, and fantastic live music enhance the experience.
“Stumbled across by accident after a walk around the park. Great atmosphere and food, service and drink were excellent. Not the cheapest place but unfortunately quality costs. The classical music played by live musicians was a lovely touch.“ (Tripadvisor)
“Palace atmosphere, royal service, excellent dishes, wonderful live music and prices commensurate with the above. It is worth enjoying!“ (Google)
“We had a lovely lunch on a rainy afternoon. The restaurant is large yet welcoming and has some beautiful and eclectic decor. There was also live music that we very much enjoyed. Everything we ate was delicious and presented with elegance.” (Google)
